County Captains for 2015/2016

Open - Mike Conroy

U180 - Bill O'Rourke

U160 - Bill O'Rourke

U140 - Dave Almond

U120 - Dave Thorp

U100 - Steve Crook

Lancashire was represented in 3 of the semi-finals.

The OPEN, U160 and U140.

Not sure of the exact reasons, but Kent forfeited their match in the open, so a 16-0 win for Lancashire and a walkover into the final where there will meet up again with the White Rose of Yorkshire.

The U160 team had a great win against Middlesex, running out winners by 11-5, and once again the final will be a matchup against the White Rose county!

The U140 team had a closer match against Worcestershire who were the current holders.  Both teams put our strong teams, and the result was 8-8 with Lancashire winning on board count (31 v 33).  The last match to finish deciding it in Lancashire's favour with a draw.  However, see the full report below for an exercise in Queen and Knights!  The U140 team play Nottinghamshire in the final, having beaten Yorkshie 8.5-7.5 - so we were denied a clean sweep in terms of War of the Roses finals.

Finals take place on 1st July, so now it is a case of organising 48 players to get down to the finals!

Finals day will look like this.

OPEN Lancashire  v Yorkshire
U180 Devon v Middlesex
U160 Lancashire  v Yorkshire
U140 Lancashire  v Nottinghamshire
U120 Middlesex  v Essex
U100 Leicestershire  v Warwickshire
Minor Suffolk  v Lincolnshire

Results from the matches, which took place in Spondon at the East Midland Bridge Club.  We have been there many times before, it is a great venue and once again did not disappoint.  Lancashire being victims various M6 accidents in previous years all set off early, and the Little Chef at Uttoexter seemed to be a stopping off place for everyone.  We (myself, Geoff and Kenny) arrived there well in advance and were settled down with pots of tea ... over the next 30 minutes it seemed all the Lancashire team had stopped off at the same place on route!

It all meant both teams arrived in Spondon refreshed and with no incident!

The U140 match went to the wire, and a very interesting endgame position ensued on the last board to finish.  Worcestershire at that stage needed to win this to go through.  Grading - first grade if July 2016, second is January 2017

The U160 match was not so close, Lancashire ran out winners 11-5, with only 2 lost games out of 16.

Kenny Quinn had a storming win in 21 moves, with a clinical finish to punish his opponent's blunder.  If your opponent does blunder, you still need to finish it off!

Some Games from the Semi Final, first my game against Alex.  Nothing of note from that game.  Then Kenny's game, which had an explosive finish. Finally, an endgame study there the position went from White win to Black win to draw.
